The POPular FAQCan I use the POPular proxy for outgoing POP connections through my firewall to my mail provider? No, the POPular proxy is intended for mail providers. It will not work for you unless you go through a lot of trouble. Use a transparent TCP proxy instead. Search for "tcp proxy" on freshmeat.net for a list of software you can use. Will POPular work on operating system X? POPular ist developed on Linux. I haven't tested it on other systems and have no idea, whether it will work. I appreciate any help on getting POPular to run on different platforms. Which mail server (MTA) should I use with POPular? This is totally up to you. POPular will work with any MTA that is able to write mailboxes in Maildir format or that can call an external program for delivery. This includes sendmail, exim, postfix, qmail and other programs. There is no preferred MTA as the MTAs job and the job of the POP server are perfectly orthogonal. When will feature X be available? As I mostly do impovements on POPular in my spare time, I am not promising anything. If you are interested in a particular feature, tell me. The more people there are asking, the higher the job will probably be on my priority list. And you can always offer to pay me for it. :-) What mailbox formats do you support? At the moment only Maildir format is supported. At some point I might support different formats. It is very unlikely though, that I will support any formats where a mailbox is respresented by one file and not by one or more directories, because I don't want to get into that whole locking mess. Does POPular support IMAP? No, there is no IMAP support. Writing an IMAP server is much more complicated than writing a POP server and I don't have the time to start a big project like that. At some point there might be IMAP support in the proxy, but the storage server will probably never support it. | ||||
