Programs: clockd

Run this program as root in the background. It will check your /etc/inittab for all the console devices where a getty is running and will show the current date and time on each virtual console. The display is updated every second.

Because the display of the time should not clutter your screen when you are working, it will only be displayed at the login prompt. To find out whether the login prompt is on the screen or not the clockd-Program needs a special /etc/issue-File that displays a box in the upper righthand corner of the screen. The date and time will appear in this box. If there is no box or the box is at the wrong position clockd will stop updating the display. You can change the /etc/issue-File to suit your needs, but keep the box and the control characters and the beginning (they clear the screen).

Download clockd. This version will print the date in the format used in Germany, but it is easy to change this to whatever you like.

Note: In most distributions the /etc/issue-File is automatically updated when the machine boots. To change this find the boot script responsible for that (should be somewhere in /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d depending on your distribution) and delete the part where /etc/issue is updated.

This is how it will look like:
