Earth Brick House, Oamaru
The Earth Brick House Bed & Breakfast in
Oamaru
is mainly interesting for its unusual hosts: Michael is a bookbinder by trade,
a pennyfarthing rider by enthusiasm, sergeant in ALF's Imperial Army by
promotion and a general eccentric. His wife Kahren owns the
Slightly Foxed Secondhand Bookshop in the historic precinct of Oamaru.
Michael and Kahren are truly nice and interesting people to meet.
Some more information about the B&B and Oamaru can be found in my
travel reports (in
German).
The Bed & Breakfast is located at a quiet side road near the beach where
the Yellow Eyed Penguins can be watched. It overlooks a garden, some fields
and the ocean. There is only one room with a double bed for guests, who
share the bathroom with their hosts. Michael and Kahren don't advertise
the B&B's existence, apart from a listing at the local Tourist Information.
You can try to reach them at home under +64-3-434-6210 or through the
Tourist Info.
Or, if you happen to be in Oamaru, check the bookbinder's workshop or the
Slightly Foxed bookshop. They are well worth a visit anyway.
